Recently, it was learned from Zixing Cultural Tourism Radio, Television and Sports Bureau that an ancient tomb of the Western Jin Dynasty was found in Shangzaoping Shizishan, Dongjiang Street, Zixing City, with a history of more than 1700 years.
On September 5, Zixing Cultural Relics Institute received a report from Shangzaoping Community of Dongjiang District Office that an ancient tomb was found at the construction site of Shizishan Avenue. In order to protect the tombs, Zixing Cultural Relics Institute immediately sent special personnel to the scene and timely reported to Chenzhou Cultural Tourism Radio, Television and Sports Bureau. In the afternoon of that day, the technicians visited the site and preliminarily identified it as an ancient tomb in the Western Jin Dynasty, which has high archaeological value. In order to rescue cultural relics in time, Zixing Cultural Relics Institute applied for special funds and started excavation on September 7. With the help of Chenzhou Cultural Tourism Radio, Television and Sports Bureau, and Chenzhou Museum, the archaeological rescue and excavation of ancient tombs was completed on September 12.
The ancient tomb excavated is a brick chamber tomb, which is composed of a tomb path, a front chamber and a back chamber, with a length of 7.36 meters. More than 20 cultural relics, such as celadon pots, lanterns and Wuzhu copper coins, have been unearthed. There is a clear chronology of "three years of Yongxing" on the brick, i.e. 306 A.D., from which it can be inferred that the ancient tomb is the tomb of the Western Jin Dynasty.
Because of the definite age of the ancient tomb, it has important historical and cultural value. In order to better protect and use cultural relics, Zixing Municipal, together with Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, has carried out sorting and research on cultural relics unearthed from the ancient tomb. The staff of Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology cleaned, drew, photographed and rubbed the relics and bricks unearthed from the ancient tomb.
In the process of sorting out, the staff of Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Zixing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics exchanged views on the protection and utilization of cultural relics. It was believed that the timely cleaning of cultural relics unearthed from the ancient tomb is the basic protection of cultural relics. To arrange and study the unearthed cultural relics in time is to make rational use of the cultural relics and make them live further.
Zixing City is an ancient city with a long history. The "root" and "soul" of the city are accumulated in ancient cultural heritages such as ancient sites, ancient tombs and ancient buildings that witness and record the city's history. The precious cultural relics unearthed in the submerged area of Dongjiang Hydropower Station from 1978 to 1980 are the important "roots" and "souls" of Zixing City.
