The photo taken on the evening of February 25 shows that the much-anticipated folk activity “night stories” performed in Doushuiping Village, Shuidong Town, Linwu County, Chenzhou, with a lively atmosphere.
As the unique traditional folk custom of the village, “night stories” have a history of more than 240 years. They are held every year from the Lantern Festival to early February in the lunar calendar, and are generally performed in Doushuiping Village, as well as in its neighboring villages and friendly villages.
The main performance forms of “night stories” include “singing”, “acting” and “reciting”. It consists of 48 small stories to form a complete “full-scale drama”, and it is not limited by the stage and venue, deeply loved by the local people.
The “night story”, which was mainly used to pray for peace in the past, has become an important emotional bond among local villagers. In 2021, “Linwu Night Story” was listed in the fifth batch of intangible cultural heritage of Hunan Province.
