Dongjiang Lake is the core scenic spot of Dongjiang Lake Scenic Area. The main scenic spots include: Dongjiang rafting, Mist-enveloped Dongjiang Lake, Dongjiang Dam, Longjing Canyon and Dongjiang Lake Cultural and Tourist Street. It’s a lake-style scenic area integrating sightseeing, leisure, fitness and health preservation, with a total area of 200 square kilometers. 

 

 

Dongjiang rafting, known as “the first drifting in China’s ecotourism”, is located on the Zheshui River in Huangcao Town, the upstream of Dongjiang Lake, with a total length of 26 kilometers.

 

 

The upper section is about 12 kilometers long in total, with the drop height of 75 meters and 108 rapids along the way. You can appreciate odd stones and rocks, clear water and virgin forests.

 

 

The lower part is Dongjiang drifting, about 14 kilometers long in total. It’s famous for its rapids, large drop, strange stones and fish, as well as lush forests on both sides of the river. 

 

 

“Mist-enveloped Dongjiang Lake” is a famous natural photography destination located at the entrance in the north of Dongjiang Lake Scenic Area. It’s a 12-km-long narrow lake. 

 

 

 

 

Dongjiang Dam is 157 meters high, 35 meters wide at the bottom and 7 meters wide at the top, with an installed capacity of 500,000 kilowatts. The central arc of the dam crest is 438 meters long. The dam ranks first in Asia and second in the world. It’s a hyperbolic thin shell arch dam designed and built by China. 

 

 

 

 

Longjing Canyon lies in Wutong village, the upper right side of Dongjiang Dam. The canyon is 2.5 kilometers long. It’s covered with lush primitive forests, and a clear stream runs through the canyon. There are 18 waterfalls and 26 deep pools are hidden in primitive forests or among jagged rocks. 

 

 

The famous Shuikoulong Waterfall is about 100 meters high and more than 20 meters wide. 

 

 

 

Doushuailing Island is the largest island of Dongjiang Lake, just like a giant lion crouching on the water. Doushuai Cave is a famous site on the island, with a history of more than 2.7 million years. It’s a limestone karst cave. It’s hidden in the monk’s house under the cliff at the southern end of the island. It’s famous for its height, hugeness, depth, width and uniqueness. The cave is about 5,000 meters deep, the widest part is about 70 meters and the height is 40 meters. There are many strange stalactites inside the cave. 

 

 

 

Dongjiang Lake covers a total area of 160 square kilometers, with an average water depth of 51 meters and a maximum depth of 157 meters. Its water storage capacity can reach 8.12 billion cubic meters, equivalent to half of Dongting Lake. Therefore, it’s known as “Dongting Lake of Southern Hunan”. It’s the largest artificial lake in Hunan province.
