World Blood Donor Day

2012-06-13

World Blood Donor Day is day dedicated to "thanking and celebrating voluntary non-remunerated blood donors". It occurs on June 14, the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the creator of the ABO blood group system, for which he won the Nobel Prize. The first day was held in 2005.One of the main goals of the World Blood Donor Day is to ensure the availability of 'safe blood' for transfusion.

With the coming of the 9th World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on Jun.14th, 2012, the Mayor of Chenzhou City- Qu Hai came to Chenzhou Central Blood Station to donate blood and appeal more citizens to attend this activity, whose theme of this year is “every donator is a hero”. Each pint of blood could potentially save the lives of three adults or seven babies. Donated blood is needed every three seconds, and it only takes a few minutes of your time to give blood.

Qu Hai arrived at the central blood station of Chenzhou on 8:00 am. After the ordinary checking procedures, Qu Hai stepped into the room for blood donation and said to the reporters :“Giving blood is almost a social responsibility; I come here to donate blood, just do a citizen’s responsibility and duty; hope you put our camera to the volunteers who set the good example for blood donation.”

After finishing the donation, Qu made jokes with the participants and blood collection room burst into a burst of hearty laughter. Qu’s presence surprised the volunteer Jiang Hualing, who has kept giving blood donation for over 10 years. When Qu learned about Jiang’s experience, he appraised : “ all the volunteers like you are real heroes. All of us should learn from you and actively take part in the gratuitous blood donation.”

Zhang Xihui- the Deputy Mayor of Chenzhou also participated in the activity.
