Hunan builds 25 sports parks over past two years

2024-07-06

A conference on promoting Hunan's construction of sports venues and facilities was held in Changsha on July 3, 2024. It aimed to address public concerns regarding sports venues and ensure the timely completion of the 2024-2025 provincial plan for upgrading construction of sports venues and facilities, as released by the Development and Reform Commission of Hunan Province and the Hunan Provincial Administration of Sport.

As of 2023, Hunan has built 194,745 sports venues with a total area of over 168.4 million sqm and per capita area of 2.55 sqm. Twenty-five sports parks are under construction or renovation.

The National Development and Reform Commission and six other related ministries jointly issued guidelines for promoting the construction of sports parks in 2021. According to the guidelines, about 1,000 sports parks will have been built or renovated nationwide by 2025. Among them, 54 are involved in Hunan's plan.

As of 2023, Hunan has completed the construction of 25 sports parks of various types. Changsha, Zhuzhou, Yueyang, Chenzhou, and Huaihua each have three parks, leading the province.

According to Hunan's construction plan of sports parks during the 14th Five-year Plan period, all cities and prefecture should fulfill at least 30% of the overall goal every year between 2022 and 2024. As of now, more than half of the cities have met this requirement.

Hunan's total and per capita area of sports and fitness venues have both seen leapfrogging growth over the past decade. The gap between Hunan and the national average in terms of per capita sports venue area has kept narrowing. By the end of 2023, the national average per capita area of sports venues was 2.89 square meters. Hunan reached 2.55 square meters, marking a 45.71% increase compared to 2020.

As of 2023, Changsha has topped the province with a per capita area of sports venues of 2.77 square meters, followed by Hengyang with the figure of 2.72 square meters. Yongzhou, Changde, and Zhangjiajie also exceeded 2.6 square meters each.

Governments at various levels have rolled out scientific arrangements and layouts to optimize the public resources for mass fitness, and made use of small and idle land to expand the per capita area of sports venues. At present, the coverage rate of sports venues and facilities in Hunan's urban communities has reached 93.71%, while in administrative villages, it stands at 92.06%.
