Hunan Province's first national science and technology Benefit project of "Demonstration project of the health protection technology application for residents in heavy metal polluted areas of Zixing City", which was organized by Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Department, led by the Zixing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and participated by the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Hunan Occupation Disease Prevention and Control Institute, and other 6 units, was approved by the experts on December 19th.

The "Demonstration project of the health protection technology application for residents in heavy metal polluted areas of Zixing City" was carried out by the Ministry of Science and Technology with 19 million yuan of state funds in 2012, which focused on the environmental pollution prevention and health protection of residents, and took the form of "government-based, science and technology, environmental protection, health and other administrative departments in coordination, active participation of grass-roots units and the masses" to explore a feasible way to ensure the health of residents in heavy metal polluted area. Many mature advanced technologies have been applied and popularized in Zixing Nonferrous Metals Processing Zone to benefit the people and achieve the stage results; some achievements have been made in the field of prevention and protection of heavy metal poisoning (lead, arsenic, cadmium, etc.); the system of on-line detection and emergency treatment of heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, etc.) and the demonstration sites for rapid detection and emergency treatment of heavy metals at county level have been established; the popularization of the heavy metal poisoning knowledge and health knowledge for local residents has reached 90.48%, and the awareness rate of heavy metal prevention and control for residents has reached 82% through the public education and science popularization.

The implementation of the project has explored a development road for the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution, real-time monitoring, health protection and the large data sharing, realized the sustainable development of economic development and people's health needs, effectively improved the quality of life and the level of health protection of residents, and played an exemplary role in the application of health protection technology in heavy metal polluted areas.
