Recently, in the survey of wetland resources and wild plants, the forestry technicians in the Beihu District found a small wetland with an area of about 3 mu within the range of the Yangtian Lake alpine wetland at 1310 meters above sea level, which was full of wild plants with small red flowers like water lilies. Professor Liu Keming, a botanical expert from Hunan Normal University, identified them as the wild Brasenia schreberi, one of the national class I protected plants.
Professor Liu Keming said: "Wild Brasenia schreberi has very high requirements for the ecological environment around it, especially for water quality. It is very difficult to grow and survive without very good water quality and it is extremely rare to find such a large scale of wild Brasenia schreberi in the south of China."
It was understood that Brasenia schreberi is the perennial aquatic root herb, belonging to the national class I key protected wild plant. It is warm in nature and suitable for the growth of a clean water pool, germinating fibrous roots and leaves from the stem of underground grape, emitting 4-6 branches, forming tufted water stems and regenerating branches. Dark green elliptic leaves grow together, about 6 to 10 cm long, 1-2 pieces per node, a plant plankton on the surface of the water or in the underlying water, tender stem and leaf back with gelatinous transparent material, blooming the small dark red flowers in summer. Brasenia schreberi contains acid polysaccharides, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, histamine and trace elements, with high medicinal and edible value.
