On December 10, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction announced the basic situation of the 5th batch of villages to be included in the list of traditional Chinese villages. 54 villages, including Xiaoxi Village in Beihu District, Liangwandong Village in Suxian District, Chennan Village in Zixing City and Niutou Village in Yongxing County, were listed.
Traditional Chinese villages, formerly known as ancient villages, refer to villages built before the Republic of China. Traditional villages are regarded as "living fossils" of farming civilized villages. However, due to their disrepair and lack of effective protection, they are facing such problems as sharp decline in number, serious destruction and pollution threat. In order to protect traditional villages and retain homesickness, the Ministry of Housing and Construction, the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Relics and the Ministry of Finance jointly launched the investigation and declaration of traditional villages in China in 2012. In the previous 4 batches of declarations of traditional Chinese villages, 35 villages in the city have successfully declared. These selected traditional villages can receive financial support from the central government to carry out maintenance and protection work.
