Rare Wild Protected Animal Leopard Cat Found in Anren County

2019-01-22

On the morning of January 14, an ecological forest ranger in Yangnao Dongchong Village, Jinzixian Town, Anren County, found a wild animal trapped by iron in the mountain forest. It was much like a cat, but bigger and fiercer than the cat he had ever seen. After checking, the forest protection personnel immediately reported to the village committee and the forestry workstation of the jurisdiction by telephone. After the staff went to the scene to dispose of the wound on the animal's foot, they immediately contacted the Wildlife Protection Station. It was confirmed that the injured animal was a leopard cat, a national second-class wildlife conservation animal.

Leopard cats, also known as lynx, belong to Mammalia, Carnivora and Catidae in animal classification. They are good at running, attacking and climbing trees, often active in forest areas and bushes, bold and ferocious, and usually come out at night. They feed mainly on birds, hunt other animals by ambush and also eat rats, snakes, frogs and fruits. Leopard cats have been listed in the Appendix Restriction List of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is the key species to measure the ecological indicators of a region.

Before 1984, Anren County found in the county wildlife census that there were many species in Jinzixian, Longhai, Huawang and Yangjian villages and towns. Since then, no signs of activity have been found. The living organisms were found again after 35 years.

The reappearance of the leopard cat shows that in recent years, the Anren County Party Committee and the County Government have achieved great results in the construction of closed mountain forestation, conversion of farmland to forests, prohibition of logging and ecological civilization. The ecological environment of the county has been significantly improved, which also shows that the wild animal and plant population in Anren County is gradually recovering.

The Head of Anren County Forestry Bureau Wildlife Protection Station said that owing to the serious foot injury of leopard cat, he had contacted the Provincial Forestry Bureau Wildlife Rescue Center and would send it to the Provincial Wildlife Rescue Center for medical treatment as soon as possible. Meanwhile, they will take protective measures immediately to increase the monitoring of the discovered areas, understand the life habits and population distribution of leopard cats in detail, and further explore and arrange to severely crack down on wildlife hunting and centralize the clearance of hunting nets and traps. They will also call on the general public to take an active part in protection actions and report illegal acts in time.
