Chenzhou expert contributes to new generation spacesuit design

2021-07-07

Two Chinese astronauts, or taikonauts, stepped out of China’s Tianhe space station core module at 8:11 am and 11: 02 am respectively on June 4, to conduct a series of planned missions including lifting the panorama camera outside the cabin. This was the second spacewalk in China's aerospace history following the one in the 2008 Shenzhou-7 mission.

The entire extravehicular activity (EVA) lasted 7 hours, and by 2:57 pm, the two taikonauts safely returned to the Tianhe core module, marking the successful completion of all set task goals of the first spacewalk mission, laying the foundation for a following EVA, the CMSA said.

One of the devices that contributed to the success of the spacewalk was a new generation spacesuit codenamed Fei Tian”. It was designed by the intelligent equipment research team led by Luo Jianping, an assistant professor at HNU (Hunan University) School of Design. His team led the design of the appearance of the spacesuit, the human-spacesuit interaction system, etc. and was involved in the entire process of development and testing.

Luo Jianping is a native of Jiahe County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province. He attended Jiahe No. 1 High School, Xiangtan University for his undergraduate studies and Tsinghua University for his graduate studies. He is currently working in Hunan University.

According to Luo Jianping, the design of this new generation spacesuit has three major highlights: firstly, it is easier to operate; secondly, it is reliable to manufacture and use; and thirdly, it is a hi-tech design with Chinese cultural elements.

At the same time, the new generation spacesuit has adopted high-tech space technology. Astronaut Nie Haisheng mentioned in an interview that compared with the previous spacesuits, the new one has improved the out-of-cabin support time from 4 hours to 7 to 8 hours and are also equipped with electronic devices such as cameras.
