Barren hills turned into fruit land

2021-08-17
In the planting base of Langshi Village, Youma Town, Yongxing County, yellow peaches, golden plums and chick peaches are ripe, and workers are busy picking chick peaches with smiles on their faces.

Langshi Village, located in the remote mountainous area in the west of Yongxing County, has a typical karst landform where the mountains are mainly covered by stones and shrubs. The villagers' harvest was barely enough to live on. And the fields were abandoned as some villagers chose to work outside.

Two villagers, Deng Hesheng and Deng Hebing, returned home to start a business with the passion of changing their hometown. They established a planting and aquaculture cooperative on a land of 500 mu in the barren mountains to develop underforest economy.

In a few years, the barren hills have become "golden land", contributing to the rural economic development. At present, the cooperative has 300 mu of fruit trees, more than 100 mu of tea-oil trees, 50 mu of seedling base, 6 mu of fishpond. More than 100 villagers and households used to live in poverty have become shareholders through their land, capital and labor service. This pattern has boosted the villagers’ confidence to increase their income, and enhanced their corresponding capability.

Fruit trees not only support a new form of business, but also boost rural tourism. Since the middle of July this year, tourists from Chenzhou and surrounding areas have come to pick fruit by themselves and experience the fun of picking. A tourist said, "There are green mountains, clean water and all kinds of fruits. My friends and I really enjoy picking and the delicious farm dishes."
