Chenzhou’s efforts to create garden city

2021-09-18

In recent years, the local government of Chenzhou has focused on creating a garden city. It works hard to promote the greening construction of the city to make it more livable and improve the citizens’ well-being. By the end of 2020, the green coverage rate and the green land rate of the urban area had reached 46.56% and 41.95% respectively, and the per capita park green area had been up to 13.59 square meters. The three indicators ranked among the top of Hunan province. All counties are rated as provincial garden cities (counties) in Chenzhou City, three of which are national garden cities (counties).

The government practices the concept of green development and makes plans for greening construction. It has built 30 urban mountain parks, 30 landscape roads, 32 shady roads and 127 parks successively.

Since 2010, the city has carried out a series of activities for greening construction. It has planted trees with an area of more than 1.97 million mu (131,333 hectares) and planted more than 4.64 million seedlings in the downtown area. 12 parks have been built with the joint efforts of all sectors of society. The greening enthusiasm among the citizens in turns drove the greening of its 9 neighboring cities and counties.

Since 2018, the city has upgraded 20 road intersections with an area of over 5,700 square meters. It has made a three-year plan to demolish old shops on the both sides of the streets and clean up idle corners for vest-pocket parks of over 30,000 square meters.

The government has focused on the construction of parks. It has built 9 theme parks like “Chinese Women's Volleyball Spirit Theme Park” and “Integrity Cultural Park”. It has integrated natural and ecological resources with historical and cultural resources in the central urban area to advance the development of regional tourism and urban-rural integration. It has constructed an ecological greenway along Xihe River.

The greenway covers 110 kilometers and connects Guiyang, Beihu, Suxian and Yongxing. The city has served as an excellent example for urban and rural overall planning demonstration belt, watershed governance, industrial transformation and rural revitalization. Besides, it was awarded “China Habitat Environment Prize” and became the model of ecological environment improvement in Xiangjiang River Basin.
