Photos taken on September 16 show well-protected and flourishing silver fir forest in Bamian Mountain National Nature Reserve, Guidong County, Chenzhou City.

Silver fir left from the Quaternary Glacier age is a rare species endemic to China. As the first-grade state protection plant, it is called “plant panda” and “living fossil” by botanists.

Silver fir is an evergreen tree with tall and straight trunk, and lush foliage. Its round fruits mature every two years. Silver fir once grew in Eurasia, with its fossil found in Germany, Poland, France and the former Soviet Union. Every time the breeze blows, the tree glitters, so people call it silver fir.
