Chenzhou has helicopter for forest fire fighting

2021-09-28

On September 25, a helicopter with “China Emergency Response Management Department of Hunan Province” flew from Lusong Airport, Zhuzhou City, and landed on the apron of Xiangchen General Aviation Co., Ltd. in Chenzhou High-tech Zone. The helicopter will be stationed in Chenzhou for 4 months to carry out forest fire prevention and other fire fighting missions. This is the first time that the city has conducted forest fire fighting and patrol work by aviation, which is a breakthrough that fills the city’s gap in air fire rescue, and also a stability anchor that ensures early detection of fires.

Autumn and winter are the critical periods of forest fire prevention. Aviation is recognized as the most advanced means of forest fire prevention and suppression and thus plays a vital role in protecting forest resources and the safety of people’s lives and property. In recent years, the city has seen the forest coverage rate of 68.5%.

Owing to plentiful rain, the city sees more lush grass and trees, which poses a threat on forest fire prevention and makes the city one with the highest level of forest fire risk. From January to August this year, there were 8 forest fire cases in the city. In order to protect the hard-won ecological civilization achievements, the Provincial Emergency Management Department has dispatched this KA-32 large helicopter to Chenzhou City for forest fire protection and suppression.

This large helicopter produced in Russia which is mainly used for fire rescue can achieve full coverage of 200 kilometers in radius. With strong hanging ability, it can hang buckets with 3 or 5-ton water and its spraying distance is about 100 meters. The aircraft can directly extinguish or suppress the open fire, and thus relieve the burden of the fire fighters on the ground.

The fire fighting helicopter crew consists of 8 members, who are responsible for forest fire-fighting, patrol, disaster detection and command, emergency transportation of disaster relief materials, forest fire prevention publicity, etc. In the next step, the city will formulate a long-term mechanism to incorporate aviation forest fire-prevention and rescue into the daily forest protection management and thus to reduce the occurrence of forest fire accidents and ensure the safety of forests and people's lives and property.
