October 26, 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. On this special day, we went to the former residence of General Deng Hua (located in Pifu Village, Lutang District, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province). We walked along the flagstone roads amid folk houses and sweet-scented osmanthus, and finally stopped at Deng’s former residence near a pond.
The 66-year-old Deng Junzhong, is Deng Hua’s grandnephew who was born in the residence. He, who has known stories exactly about his grandfather from an very early age, has been dealing with farm work.
“I take a stroll around the residence every day to see if there are any areas that need repairing. My wife also cleans up the house every day.” To promote the glorious deeds done by the revolutionary, Deng and his family moved out to a newly-built house 300 meters away in 2008. Since then, the former residence was officially opened to visitors, but Deng’s family have been taking care of the residence voluntarily. “Since 2018, my wife can get a salary of 1,000 yuan every month from the local government."
“My grandfather dedicated his life to the cause of revolution, so I hope his story can inspire more people.” For this purpose, Deng Junzhong chose to stay in the village when other villagers sought jobs in the coastal cities.
Deng Hua was born in a family of scholars in 1910. At the age of 15, he was admitted by Changsha Yueyun Middle School. Inspired by the revolutionary movement, he actively devoted himself to the revolutionary cause. Since then, he started his military and glorious life.
“Each and everyone should be responsible for his country’s welfare and for the liberation of the people!” This is extracted form Deng’s article—Youth Outlook on Life, which is a true reflection of Deng’s faith and resolution.
Deng scored many victories in key battlefronts during the Long March, the War of Resistance Against Japan and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
In July 1950, Mao Zedong and the Central Military Commission sent troops to North Korea to fight against the United States. Deng Hua was transferred to the northeast China as the commander and political commissar of the 13th Corps. Deng was appointed by Mao Zedong to safeguard the frontiers defenses in the northeast, and also was told to make preparations for the war against the United States.
General Peng Dehuai was appointed as the commander and political commissar of Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. Ordered by the Central Military Commissar, the Command and the Political Department of 13th Corps was transformed to the Command and the Political Department of Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. Deng Hua served as the first deputy commander and depute political commissar of Chinese People’s Volunteers which was headquartered in Dayudong Village, North Korea.
From then on, Deng became Peng Dehuai’s first right-hand man in the war.
On October 14, 1952, the world-famous battle in Shangganling was deployed and commanded by Deng Hua. After 43 day’s bloody fight, 40,000 soldiers defeated 60,000 enemies of coalition forces led by the United States. Under Deng’s leadership, Chinese Volunteer Army completely shattered the military attack deployed by James Alward Van Fleet, the commander of the Eighth Army of the United States, which is a classic example of defensive warfare.
In 1955, the Chinese People's Liberation Army implemented the military rank system. Deng Hua, deputy chief of the general staff and commander of the Shenyang Military Region, was awarded the rank of air chief marshal of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and the first-level August 1st medal, the first-level independence and freedom medal, and the first-level liberation medal.
Now, the former residence of General Deng Hua has become a base for patriotism education, ideological and moral education. Numerous tourists come here to know about the history and red culture. Beihu District also takes the construction of the demonstration village the former residence lies in as an important measure to carry forward the revolutionary spirit and promote green development.
On September 10, 2021, Deng Sui, Deng Hua’s son, together with his family donated 80 red cultural relics and archives to Beihu District for free, which will be exhibited when the renovation of the residence is completed.
