On October 28, Zhu Shangu, an old man in his 80s from Wenta Community, Luyang Town of Rucheng County, Hunan Province, expressed his sincere thanks to the firefighters who installed a smoke detector in his home: “It’s so considerate of you to install smoke detectors for old people. You always put the people’s safety in the first place.”
Zhu Tongde and Cao Peng from the fire brigade of Rucheng County not only installed an independent smoke detector for the old man, but patiently taught him how to use it and what should be paid attention to.
As the weather gets colder, it is a critical period for preventing fire accidents. The elderly living alone with infirmity, poor sensory perception and slow reaction become the key group in fire and disaster prevention. Most of the residential areas in Wenta Community are old with a large number of elderly people. After several rounds of visits and investigations, the fire brigade of Rucheng County lost no time installing 56 smoke detectors to safeguard residents’ life and safety.
The fire brigade of Rucheng County, after carrying out a carpet-like investigation and registration on vulnerable groups like orphans, widows, and old people living alone, makes the plan to install overall 2,377 independent smoke detectors for them before winter comes.
A small smoke detector provides both safety and care for the people. It can detect the fire and give warnings in time, alerting people to call for police and evacuate as early as possible. When installing these detectors for residents, the firefighters also informed people of its usage and precautions, as well as helped check hidden dangers in appliances and wiring in each household.
