Chenzhou Bamboo Shed Training Hall, which is an important symbol of the spirit of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team, reopened on December 27 after it was reconstructed on the original site in the Chenzhou Sports Training Base.
In November, 1978, Chenzhou built a bamboo shed training hall for the intensified training of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team in only 43 days. From 1979 to 1981, the volleyball team carried out training here for three years in a row, and won the Asian championship in 1979 and the world championship for the first time in 1981, starting their glorious journey toward five consecutive championships.
“It was in the bamboo training hall that the coaches and players of the volleyball team developed their competitive spirit, laying a solid foundation for the rapid development of the Chinese Women's Volleyball Team,” said Li Quanqiang, director of General Administration of Sports Volleyball Sports Management Center.
In the middle of the hall is a volleyball court, and its surrounding area displays protective clothing that the team members used, hand-made training facilities and training videos. On the wall, there are such slogans as “60-day fighting for the Asian championship” and “rush out of Asia to the world”, which restores the training atmosphere at that time.
Li Shan, former member of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team, felt warm when she saw sports equipment that her senior teammates had used. She said it was hard training in the training hall that made the Spirit of the Chinese Women's Volleyball Team and we need to inherit it.
Luo Shuangquan, director of Hunan Sports Bureau, said that the bureau, together with Chenzhou Municipal Party Committee and Government, will build the bamboo shed training hall into a patriotism education base and do preparation work for the intensified training of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team.
