Xinben Village in Huangsha Town, Yizhang County, Chenzhou City takes on a new look with rows of southern style residences, different factories and various planting bases.
The village, nestled at the Luoxiao Mountain area in southern Hunan Province, was a provincial poverty-stricken village with poor infrastructure and weak industrial foundation before 2015. And villagers’ income mainly came from planting rice, tobacco, fruit trees, family breeding and labor.
In recent years, with the help of the assistance team appointed by the superior government, the village has made full use of its advantages in natural conditions like its climate, soil and transportation, and formulated industrial development plans to plant navel oranges in the mountain, raise livestock at the foot of the mountain, plant flue-cured tobacco in fields and plant melons and fruits in greenhouses, leading villagers to a well-off life.
Moreover, the village actively develops industries and encourages successful businessmen to start businesses at the village so as to create more jobs for local residents.
For example, Kaicheng electronics factory started by villager Cheng Huabing created more than 100 jobs. Yuanfa building materials factory increased more than 70 jobs after its upgrading. And more than 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares) barren hills were built into a navel orange planting base and 800 mu (about 53.3 hectares) fields into a flue-cured tobacco planting base, which totally created more than 100 jobs. In addition, a 60kw solar photovoltaic power station was built in the village.
In addition, the resettlement project enabled the villagers to live in new houses.
“Over twenty villagers have worked here over the past years, earning about 30,000 yuan a year. The navel oranges harvested from my 500-mu orange orchard were all purchased by a merchant from Guangdong, bringing a profit of 350,000 yuan,” said Cheng Jinjun, an owner of a planting cooperative.
Cooperatives and enterprises have provided a large number of jobs, so that villagers can easily find jobs near home.
The couple, Huang Cuie and Cheng Xingen, who were once poor, easily found a job near their home. In the past, due to Huang Cuie's physical disability and Cheng Xingen's unstable work, the family had meager income and lived a hard life. With the help of China’s poverty-alleviation policy, the electronics factory in the village offered a job for Huang Cuie, so that she could get employment at home and earn more than 3,000 yuan a month. And her husband also found a stable job in the nearby navel orange base.
“My two children work in Guangdong Province. My husband and I work at home. And our family's income reached more than 100,000 yuan last year. Thanks to the poverty alleviation policy, our life is becoming better, which we have never imaged even in a dream,” said Huang Cuie.
Nowadays, the village has six major industries, including navel orange, flue-cured tobacco, pig breeding, new building materials and electronics manufacturing. Among them, the planting area of navel orange is more than 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares) and the planting area of flue-cured tobacco is more than 800 mu (about 53.3 hectares).
Enterprises in the village not only provide a large number of jobs for local villagers, but also for residents in six surrounding towns. The village gained a collective income of more than 300,000 yuan in 2021.
“We will continue to expand and strengthen the industry of our village and build Xinben village into a more prosperous and beautiful place,” said Xu Sijun, party secretary of the village.
