Ou’s family of four lived in a 40-quare-meter old house in Longhu Village before the relocation. “There was only one room, so my two sons had to sleep in the narrow attic. We had no kitchen but a small shed outside for cooking. When there was rain, the whole roof was leaking,” said Ou. But what made him most concerned was not the poor living environment but the inconvenient transportation and medical service because of the remoteness.

 

In 2008, Ou’s youngest son injured three fingers of his left hand while making food for their hogs with a machine. There was no car at that time, so Ou had to carry his son on his back and went to the township hospital 17 kilometers away by feet along the rugged mountain road. “I couldn’t remember how long I ran, I just wanted to rush to the hospital and find a doctor for my son,” Ou said.

 

That incident made it occur to Ou that he had to change their poor conditions. Under the policy of relocation, Ou’s family moved into a new and spacious house, leading a happy life they had dreamed for a long time.

 

“My sons were overjoyed when moving into the new house,” Ou said with joy. In this 100-square-meter new house, Ou’s sons have their own rooms.

 

To help the relocated people settle in the site, Yunxian Village carried out various vocational skills training for those relocated households. Ou gained the chef certificate after taking part in a chef training session for more than one month. Under the help of the village, Ou opened a small restaurant near his home.

 

 

The restaurant now earns him more than 200 yuan every day, which is enough to cover the daily expense of Ou’s family. “We have a very happy life now. In the future, I will try my best to run the restaurant and bring up my sons,” Ou said with a smile.
