A picture taken in Taihe Village, Wushui Town, Linwu County, Chenzhou shows ripe and red strawberries to come onto the market.
In a strawberry plantation, rows of green nurseries are dotted with white flowers and bright red fruits with large size, delicate flesh and sweet taste.
Farmers are busy picking up ripe strawberries in the fields, with the daily output of more than 250 kg. Strawberry is crowned with "Fruit Queen" for its brightness, fragrance, deliciousness, and rich nutrition, which makes it popular among customers.
Li Yousong, a native of Jiande city in Zhejiang Province, who has been planting strawberries since 1998, has constantly improved the technology, carried out scientific management, and introduced superior varieties in recent years. Since he established the strawberry base in Linwu county in 2018, there have been 18 strawberry greenhouses, covering an area of nearly 20 mu (about 1.33 hectares).
According to Li, Linwu county endowed with good soil and sufficient water is suitable for strawberries to grow. His strawberries, developed by Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, are disease-resistant and of high quality.
In addition to variety, the taste and survival rate of strawberry also depend on planting techniques and timing, plowing depth, type and ratio of fertilizers, and pest control.
Strawberries are usually planted in early September and come on the market around late November. Due to its limited daily output caused by long picking period of 5 to 6 months, the market often sees a short supply, during which time the highest price reaches 80 yuan per kilogram. At the peak of picking, Li's daily sales amount to more than 10,000 yuan.
Li Yousong will further expand the strawberry planting industry to increase the income of more farmers and realize common prosperity.
