On April 11, Wang Zhicheng, the head of a specialized farmers' cooperative in Qulong Village, Tangcun Town, Jiahe County, Chenzhou City, led villagers to plough farmland for the preparation of early season rice transplanting. This year, the cooperative transferred more than 73 hectares of abandoned cultivated land for rice growing.
With a large number of local people going out for work and the high farming costs due to its hilly terrain, as well as aging water conservancy facilities, some cultivated land has been abandoned. In order to strengthen grain production, the county has made great efforts to control the abandonment of cultivated land and promote the resumption of cultivation and planting in recent years.
At present, it has managed 2,653 hectares of abandoned farmland for the annual goal of grain sowing to reach 20,866 hectares and grain output to exceed 123,000 tons this year.
Jiahe County integrates agriculture-related funds to support the centralized seedling raising, the establishment of demonstration areas with high yields, the construction of high-quality rice bases, etc. It lists grain production and abandoned farmland management as important contents of performance and supervision. It also assigns tasks to townships, village groups, and farmers, involving all in the management of abandoned farmland.
Meanwhile, Jiahe County takes high-standard farmland construction as a major event for the livelihood. Taking the village as the basic unit, it increases efforts to improve the network of fields, roads and canals in a bid to promote the benefits of grain planting, as well as mobilize farmers’ production enthusiasm.
