In the Feicui Park of Guiyang County, there is a Rongcheng Book House surrounded by a forest. According to staff, the average daily visit of the book house is 200 and visitor flow doubles on weekends. The comfortable environment and various kinds of books make it a good place for citizens to enjoy reading.
Guiyang is known as Rongcheng (city of hibiscus) because there are numerous hibiscus trees planted in the county. In recent years, in order to promote reading, the county has transformed original vacant public housing into Rongcheng Book Houses with funds from the local government and enterprises. At present, there are 12 such book houses in parks and communities, creating a “ten-minute reading circle” for the public.
Each book house is designed to meet different demands from readers with reasonable layout and features. Hutengge Rongcheng Book House, for instance, is filled with an artistic atmosphere for it was converted from a calligraphy exhibition hall. And the Rongcheng Book House in Chaoyao School, which mainly serves students, focuses on children’s education.
Civic groups, primary and secondary schools and institutions in the county actively carry out activities in the book houses, such as recitation, speech contests, new book promotion, cultural lectures, and regular reading sharing, which are well-received by citizens.
Besides, Guiyang County has included reading into volunteer service and set up more than 30 reading promotion groups to hold reading activities.
Rongcheng Book House has become an important place for learning, exchange, and reading, helping create a thick reading atmosphere in the county.
