To increase the income of collective economy and broaden the channels for villagers to earn money, Guangming Village in Oujiang Town, Guidong County, has developed a characteristic planting industry of Roughhaired Holly Root to drive rural revitalization.

Roughhaired Holly Root is a traditional Chinese herb mainly grown in provinces like Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Anhui and Hunan. With the effects of clearing heat and toxicity, invigorating blood circulation and relieving pain, it is usually used for the treatment of influenza, high fever, acute tonsillitis, pharyngitis, lung abscess and other diseases.

The plant, following a roughly five-year growth cycle, requires a relatively extensive cultivation and management. In the harvest period, the output value per mu (about 666.67 square meters) is at stable at about 15,000 yuan. As the main raw material of a cold medicine in China, it is promising to plant Roughhaired Holly Root.

A 148.4-hectare forestland covers 87% of the total area in the village. To develop the planting industry, Guangming village committee has made endeavors in promoting both forestland transfer and individual planting. Up to now, a total of more than 200,000 Roughhaired Holly plants have been planted on more than 46.6 hectares of forestland. The village committee plans to add another 13.3 hectares of planting area this winter and expand it to about 67 hectares in 2023.

In the next five years, it is expected to generate an income of 1 million yuan for the village collective economy, and increase the annual average income of individual farmers by more than 2,000 yuan.
