Now people are busy working in orchards in Shazhou Yao Ethnic Village, Rucheng County, Chenzhou, which is the place where the story “Half A Quilt” took place in the Long March.
Among them, a villager called Luo Qunzhong is working hard in his orchard and five firefighters in blue are helping him with the fruit thinning.
Shazhou Village now becomes a popular destination for tourists and it is committed to passing on the revolutionary tradition and practicing green development. The local government encourages the villagers to grow fruit trees, set up stalls and run stores for the development of agricultural and tourist economy.
Luo Qunzhong, for example, has made a fortune by planting plums. His orchard covers 7 mu (1.15 acres) of farmland and recently the shortage of labour has become a big concern for him.
At the end of April, the Fire and Rescue Brigade in Rucheng County went to Shazhou Village and organized the Party Day theme activity. They were concerned for the difficulties faced by the masses and noticed that Luo was in bad need of hands. Therefore, they sacrificed their holidays and came to help Luo.
"It's time for fruit thinning. It's so lucky to have you here," said Luo Qunzhong. He was extremely surprised to see them and said, "the climate now is good for growth so we have to do the fruit thinning as soon as possible, otherwise we can't guarantee the quality."
Luo began to teach them how to cut the surplus, deformed and tiny fruitlets. They worked so hard as if they were in a competition.
As a new member of the brigade in Rucheng County, 21-year-old Duan Zuqian did this kind of work in orchards for the first time. He didn't know what to do at the beginning but it didn't take him too long to learn the technical skills with others' help.
He said, "To be able to do something practical for the masses as much as I can and let the youth glow in devotion is also the best gift for myself on the Youth Day".
"It should have taken half a month to do the fruit thinning, but now it can be done in a couple of days with your help," Luo smiled and sincerely appreciated their help.
In recent years, in addition to fire prevention and other tasks in the emergency rescue center, the Fire and Rescue Brigade in Rucheng County has also provided assistance for Shazhou County, helping resolve issues related to agriculture, farmers and rural areas. Whenever the local people need help in orchard plowing, management and picking, they would come to help without missing the duty attendance.
"How to understand the spirit of ‘Half A Quilt? It is to pass on the revolutionary tradition when serving the people wholeheartedly," said Chen Zaojun, political instructor of the Fire and Rescue Brigade in Rucheng County.
