2022-06-20

In Linjia Village, Nanqiang Town, Linwu County, the local farmers have spent 6 years in successfully cultivating the local kiwi fruits in the remote mountains at an altitude of over 400 meters.

The kiwi vines are seen on the rolling hillsides. Farmers are busy wrapping fluffy kiwis with paper bags to prevent the fruits from insect attack and bacteria damage and to reduce the pollution of chemical pesticide.

In early years, due to the lack of planting technologies, the ripe fruits were tiny and deformed, which could only be sold at a low price. To solve the problem, the cooperative arranged people to study the advanced technologies and improve planting technique.

One member of the cooperative told the reporter that the kiwi vines need regular pruning in winter and summer so that the vines can have a better ventilation and sunlight.

With 6 years' efforts, the cooperative has found a planting method suitable for the local conditions. With a series of measures such as pest control, weeding, pruning and wrapping, the cooperative has successfully bred two varieties of kiwi called Donghong and Jinyan.

Now about 1 ton of kiwis could be produced per mu (about 666.67 square meter). The production is expected to reach 300 tons this year, 5 times compared to last year, and 500 tons the year after nest.

The ripe fruits will be sold out to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities. The cooperative will further expand its planting scale and benefit more local farmers.

Kiwis not only decorate the mountains but also increase farmers' income and bring them a better life.
