Honeysuckle flowers bloom in Guangjiang Village

In early summer when honeysuckle flowers are in full bloom, it’s right time to pick the flowers in Guangjiang Village of Yizhang County.

At the honeysuckle planting base of Guangjiang Village, the fragrance of flowers greets the nose. The gold, white and green flowers hanging on the branches set each other off. Farmers are busy flitting across the field to pick honeysuckle flowers.

The honeysuckle planted in Guangjiang Village is called “Xianglei No. 1”, which usually grows in mountainous areas with an altitude of 350 meters or above. The elevation of Guangjiang Village is about 500 meters, which is very suitable for the growth of honeysuckle.

Guangjiang Village began developing honeysuckle industry in 2016, and there are 300 mu (20 hectares) of honeysuckle to be picked. Picking honeysuckle requires a large amount of labor and the base has more than 20 pickers from the surrounding area every day.

In the drying room for honeysuckle near the base, workers are busy filling trays with freshly picked flowers and putting them into the dryer.

“We sign contracts with foreign trade companies and most have been sold to them. At the same time, we will also sell our products on the e-commerce platforms,” said Ouyang Kai, head of Guangjian Ecological Planting and Breeding Cooperative.

In recent years, to improve people’s livelihood and promote the rural revitalization, the village has led the villagers to develop honeysuckle planting based on market demand and the local soil and climate under the model of “Party branch + cooperative + farmers”.

By encouraging farmers to develop honeysuckle industry and expand the deep processing chain of honeysuckle, it provides this village a new path to increase income.

Up to now, the cooperative has planted more than 400 mu (about 26.7 hectares) of honeysuckle and led more than 10 households to plant over 30 mu (2 hectares) of honeysuckle, bringing direct economic profits of more than 1 million yuan. Honeysuckle industry has become one of the important ways for local farmers to get rich and increase the income.
