Beside the main road to Yangtian Lake in Chenzhou City, Hunan Province stands a popular farmhouse where tourists can eat green and ecological local dishes.
Every morning, Zhao Shiqing, the owner of the farmhouse, buys fresh ingredients from house to house in the village. Thanks to the development of the local scenic area, Zhao Shiqing not only successfully lifted himself out of poverty, but also led villagers to sell characteristic products of Yao ethnic group, keeping up with rural revitalization.
Zhao Shiqing was born in 1981 in a village of Yao nationality in the mountainous area of Southern Hunan. His ancestors migrated here 400 years ago. In the early years, seven people of three generations of his family lived in a small brick house on a hill, earning a living by doing odd jobs and cutting bamboo.
Zhao Shiqing was identified as a registered poor household in 2014 and took part in a poverty alleviation program in 2015 to learn cooking skills. As the poverty alleviation relocation and other good news happened one after another, his family got a subsidy of 25,000 yuan for relocation from the government.
During the Spring Festival of 2017, Zhao Shiqing’s family moved into their new house from the depths of the mountains. By the end of the year, he had paid off all his debts and got out of poverty.
In 2018, Zhao Shiqing opened a farmhouse next to the main road to Yangtian Lake. Relying on the development of local scenic spots and the steady flow of tourists, Zhao’s annual income reached 150,000 yuan in 2021.
With the comprehensive promotion of rural revitalization, Zhao Shiqing’s family live a better-off life after years of hard work and struggles. To return the favor, he insists on buying all the ingredients from the villagers, and also helps them sell characteristic dishes of Yao, preserved pork, wild vegetables and other agricultural products.
Led by Zhao Shiqing, many villagers have changed their lives with their own hard work. Now they not only live a happy life but also contribute to the rural revitalization.
