On June 28, the Hunan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment held a press conference and released the 2021 Hunan Province Ecological and Environmental Status Report. The report shows that in 2021, the ecological environment in Hunan Province was stable and improved, with stable air quality, steadily improved water quality, effectively protected natural ecology and good urban and rural living environment.
In terms of the ambient air quality, the average percentage of days with good air quality was 91.0% in 14 cities at the prefecture level in Hunan Province. No heavily polluted weather was monitored. Ambient air quality in 6 cities including Zhangjiajie and Chenzhou reached the national secondary standard.
The average percentage of days with good air quality in 90 county-level towns in Hunan Province was 95.5%, down 0.8 percentage points year on year. No heavily polluted weather was monitored. The frequency of acid rain in 14 cities across the province was 40.1%, a decrease of 9.9 percentage points compared to the previous year.
In terms of water quality, 96.1% of 534 provincial surface water assessment sections were at or above the grade III, up 0.2 percentage points compared to the previous year. The proportion was 97.3% in 147 national assessment sections, an increase of 4% year on year. The surface water quality in Hunan Province was generally in good condition.
In terms of natural ecology, the soil and water conservation rate in Hunan Province increased to 86.08%, up 0.17 percentage points compared to the previous year. An area of 1867.21 square kilometers of soil erosion was managed and 377.08 square kilometers of man-made soil erosion was prevented and controlled.
A total of 175 nature reserves have been established in Hunan province, with a total area of 1.499 million hectares, which are pivotal to protect natural ecology and biodiversity. 135 forest parks above the county level have been established, with a total planning area of 516,600 hectares and a forest coverage rate of 59.97%. The ecological environment continues to be in good condition.
In terms of the living environment of urban and rural residents, the daytime compliance rate for ambient noise in urban functional areas in Hunan Province was 97.4% and the nighttime compliance rate was 85.2%, an increase of 5.6 percentage points and 10.4 percentage points respectively compared to the previous year.
The daytime regional sound environment quality in the city was generally good, with urban road traffic noise at daytime level 1. The results of automatic monitoring of the radiation environment and accumulated dose monitoring show the stability of the radiation environment in Hunan.
By the end of 2021, 163 urban domestic sewage treatment plants had been built in cities above the county level and its domestic sewage treatment rate reached 98.04%. 914 townships had built or connected to sewage treatment facilities.
There had been 97 sanitary landfills and 26 incineration treatment plants for domestic waste in all cities of Hunan province. Urban domestic sewage and waste had been effectively disposed.
