Red pomelos help villagers get rich

2022-09-27

In autumn, rows of honey pomelo trees are neatly planted at the red pomelo planting base in Yantan Village, with a faint fragrance in the air. If you get closer, you will see each tree is covered with fruits, with the size of a big one comparable to a volleyball.

It has been more than 500 years for Yantan Village to cultivate red pomelo in China. The red pomelo was listed as an imperial tribute under the reign of Qianlong during the Qing Dynasty. It is famous in China and abroad for its thin peel, juicy and sweet taste. Due to its rich Vitamin C and other elements, it is recognized by the medical community as the most therapeutic fruit.

In 2010, Yantan Village was still a poor village, with much land laid idle due to the drain of rural labor. In order to reverse the situation, the village government introduced red pomelo from Fujian Province and built the first red pomelo planting base in Anren County.

After more than ten years of development, there are now more than 1,000 mu (66.67 hectares) of red pomelo, which help the villagers get rich.

In the red pomelo planting base, there is a variety called Guanxi Pomelo, which has a relatively small planting area in China, but a high price. It is widely welcomed by consumers and has a prominent market advantage. And this kind of pomelo is disease-resistant and highly productive. A 2 to 3-year-old tree can produce about 20 to 30 pomelos. The older the tree gets, the more fruits it will bear.

The base began to plant red pomelo in March 2010. The harvest season begins in October and lasts until December. Customers began to book in advance from August this year.
