There are many carps (Procypris merus) raised in the green rice fields in Cailing Village, Suxian District, Chenzhou City. The fish brings wealth to local villagers.
Since 2015, the fish and rice festival has been held in Cailing Village for nine consecutive years. The carps are raised in more than 1,200 mu (80 hectares) of rice fields.
Every year during the festival, villagers will drain water from the rice fields in advance, erect bamboo boards in the mud, circle small “fish ponds”, and then lead tourists to catch fish and spiral shells.
Rolling up their trousers and bending down into the rice fields, quick-sighted villagers and tourists will catch fish quickly, which slowly fills the bucket.
“Procypris merus is sold for 40 yuan a catty,” said a villager, “Usually, customers call in advance to make reservations, and we go to catch fish for them. Many people will buy it every year.”
The secret of the development of Cailing Village lies in more than its fish and rice. The village, with an average altitude of about 850 meters, is only 17 kilometers away from the Yangtian Lake Grassland Scenic Area.
Today, relying on this advantage, the village has made the overall planning for the cultural tourism industry. It built a 4,000-meter-long trail in the Zhujiangyuan Grand Canyon, striving to make it a 3A-level scenic area. It also built a sightseeing road that leads to Yangtian Lake Grassland.
At the same time, it also planned to develop 1,000 mu (about 66.67 hectares) of rhododendrons, build homestay inns, and create summer resorts, in an effort to promote the development of rural leisure and cultural tourism.
The collective economic income of Cailing Village was about 110,000 yuan in 2022, and it is expected to reach 200,000 yuan this year.
