The Characteristics of Hunan Kunqu Opera

2018-09-26

Hunan Kunqu Opera, one of the great local dramas in Hunan Province, is considered to be homologous with Suzhou Kunqu in the southern and Northern Kunqu in northern China.

Compared with Suzhou Kunqu and Northern Kunqu Opera, Hunan Kunqu Opera mainly has the following characteristics.

In the aspect of performing plays, it meets the needs of rural performances and peasants'viewing habits, mainly some large plays with complete plots. There are more than 40 major long plays such as "The Eight Heroes" and "The Kirin Pavilion", and a number of short plays such as "Lu Zhishen Wrecks the Temple Gate", "Longing For the Mortal World", "Ripples of Desire","Gold Collection", "On The Frontier" and "Sister In Marriage".

In terms of music, Hunan Kunqu Opera belongs to the tune complet style. The northern tune and southern tune have their own characteristics, retaining more than 400 tunes. Singing is influenced by Qi Opera and local language tone, which is simple and natural. Hunan Kunqu Opera's pronunciation is based on Chenzhou Mandarin and combined with Zhongzhou rhyme, which is not as delicate and beautiful as Suzhou Kunqu's, nor as bold and magnificent as Northern Kunqu's, but it has a high tone and powerful pronunciation, together with a tight rhythm and a rolling contrast, thus forming a "popular music" with local characteristics.

In terms of performing arts, Hunan Kunqu Opera not only maintains the exquisite and traditional style of Kunqu Opera, but also embodies the bold and rough local characteristics.

In the historical development, Hunan Kunqu Opera is closely related to Qi Opera, Hengyang Xiang Opera and other local operas and folk art forms, drawing nutrients from them, and combines with the characteristics of the production and life and the customs of the local people, creating a lot of special programs. These artistic creation not only formed the artistic characteristics of Hunan Kunqu Opera, but also became the artistic heritage of preservation.
