"Peony Pavilion" to be Performed at 6th China-ASEAN Drama Week

On the evening of August 31st, the Peony Pavilion, the Tianxiang version of Hunan Kunqu Opera Troupe, was performed at the classical theatre. According to Luo Yan, Head of the delegation, the Peony Pavilion will be invited to perform at the 6th China-ASEAN (Nanning) Drama Week in 2018. Ni Fang, who is the National Second-Class Dance Design in Zhejiang Yue Opera Troupe, was invited to be the new stage designer.

 

The Peony Pavilion is the masterpiece of the Ming Dynasty Tang Xianzu, also one of the four dreams of Linchuan. Since the performance of Peony Pavilion by Hunan Kunqu Opera Troupe, it has performed in and out of Hunan Province,winning numerous praises, and has been successfully performed at the National Grand Theatre, becoming one of the classic plays of Hunan Kunqu Opera. In order to create an atmosphere for the 15th China-ASEAN Expo held this month and to provide a platform for exhibition and exchange with theatrical artists from ASEAN countries, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Cultural Department and the Nanning Municipal People's Government held the 6th China-ASEAN (Nanning) Drama Week. After selection, the Peony Pavilion, the Hunan Kunqu Opera Tianxiang version, has become a Chinese-ASEAN outstanding repertoire performance, and has been invited to participate in this China-ASEAN drama cooperation and exchange mechanism members summit forum.

 

The Peony Pavilion, which was performed that evening, was different from the previous versions in its entirely new stage designer.Ni Fang, who was selected twice for the WSD World Stage Design Exhibition and twice won the "Academy Award" of the Chinese Academy of Stage Arts. He created the space artistic conception on the stage of drama with the "blank","freehand brushwork", "concise" and "artistic charm" of traditional Chinese painting, restored the aesthetic characteristics of traditional opera's freehand program performance, and used a concise "beauty" to tell the moving love story of the Peony Pavilion. Under the moving performance of Lei Ling, a national first-class actor and winner of the Plum Blossom Award for drama, and Wang Fuwen, an outstanding young actor of the troupe, the audience who came to watch the performance with admiration was applauded warmly.
