People eat moon cake on Middle Autumn Day (on August 15th of the Lunar Calendar). Gifts sent by relatives and friends on that day are always considered as an expression of love and affection. In ancient China, a custom named sending blessing to others to have a baby   prevailed. If a couple couldn't have a child years after their marriage, their relatives and friends would take a white gourd, wrapped it with red cloth and presented them to the couple on the festival day, accompanying with music of drums and gongs. The couple, in turn, would cater them by thundering the salutes.
