Straw Ash Water Zongzi gains great popularity

Guiyang’s Straw Ash Water Zongzi, which is one of Chenzhou’s intangible cultural heritage items, was well received by consumers due to its special taste during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

Zhang Haiping, an inheritor of Guiyang Straw Ash Water Zongzi, said, “At present, the sales are very good. According to our statistics, we have reached last year’s sales and sold two million Zongzi more over last year. Among them, our Chestnut Meat Zongzi, Egg Yolk Meat Zongzi and Alkaline Zongzi can sell more than 10,000 per day.”
 
Here are the processes of making Straw Ash Water Zongzi. First, rice straw stalks need to be burned into ash, then filtered by spring water to make ash water. Second, let the glutinous rice soak in the ash water. Third, the soaked glutinous rice can be wrapped with chestnuts and other ingredients by bamboo leaves and tied tightly by straw stalks. Because of its characteristics, Straw Ash Water Zongzi has become a “time-honored brand” that is favoured by consumers.

So far, the daily sales of Guiyang Straw Ash Water Zongzi has been up to 35,000 with an output value of more than 8 million yuan, helping more than 130 people to get jobs and increase income. 
 
Zhang Haiping said, “We will continue to build the Zhang Haiping brand of Straw Ash Water Zongzi with consistent high quality.”
