Watershed management benefits Beihu District’s tourism

Yangtian Lake Grassland Scenic Spot, Beihu District, Chenzhou City has gained popularity among the people from Hunan, Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces with its mountains, grasslands and lakes, since it held the Hunan (Summer) Rural Cultural Tourism Festival this year. In August this year, Yangtian Lake received over 53,000 visitors, which generated revenue of about 4.3 million yuan.

 

There are 33 rivers and 15 reservoirs including Xihe River and Chenjiang River in Beihu District.
 
In recent years, Beihu District has advanced water resources management and protection, water pollution prevention and control, water ecological restoration and other work. 
 
By realizing "clean water, clear river, green bank and beautiful scenery", Beihu District has promoted high-quality economic and social development and ranked first in the city's river chief system assessment for three consecutive years.
 
Yangtian Lake grassland wetland is the source of Xihe River, and its environment was once degraded by overgrazing. Beihu District has implemented a series of measures to restore ecology in accordance with local conditions such as afforestation, grazing prohibition, grassland restoration.

Beihu District has stepped up restoration of Yangtian Lake grassland and improved the capacity of water conservation via regulation of soil moisture and nutrients. The coverage rate of grassland increased from 64% in 2019 to 90%. Now, the Yangtian Lake Grassland Scenic Spot presents a beautiful ecological picture, and the local culture and tourism economy has ridden on the momentum and achieved rapid growth.
 
Taking Xihe River as the core, Beihu District has fully implemented the ecological restoration and comprehensive management of the Xihe River basin, promoted the construction of Siqing Lake and Xianling Lake as the province-level beautiful river and lake and the "model river" of the Xihe River Sanhe Section. 
 
The local government has also carefully arranged the projects concerning interconnected water system and beautiful village construction to vigorously develop the agricultural industries and characteristic industries along the Xihe River.

At present, eight villages along the Huatang Section of Xihe River have developed 100 farmhouses, homestays and agricultural tourism, receiving more than 50,000 tourists annually and providing over 5,000 jobs for villagers with an annual per capita income of 32,000 yuan.
