Dongjiang Orange
Dongjiang Orange, a special product of Zixing City, Hunan Province, is a geographical indication of agricultural products in China.
Dongjiang Orange fruit is flat and round in shape, smooth in surface, orange red in skin, bright in color, thin in skin, small in oil cell, easy to split, tender in juice cell, seedless and juicy, rich in flavor and moderate in sweetness and acidity.
Dongjiang Lake is located in subtropical monsoon humid climate with suitable temperature, abundant rainfall, sufficient sunshine and four distinct seasons. The annual average sunshine hours are 1461.1 hours, the annual average temperature is 23.18 ℃, the extreme high temperature is 37.4 ℃, the extreme low temperature is - 2.7 ℃, the frost free period is 343 days, the annual average rainfall is 1462.6 mm, the average relative humidity is 78 percent, especially the large water body effect of Dongjiang Lake forms the unique microclimate of warm winter and cool summer in Dongjiang Lake, which is the most suitable area for orange production.
Dongjiang Lake, located in the upper reaches of Dongjiang River in Zixing City, Chenzhou, is an artificial lake integrating power generation, tourism and cultivation. It has a water surface of 240000 mu and a water storage capacity of 8.12 billion cubic meters, which is equivalent to half of Dongting Lake, called "Dongting in South Hunan". There are many water storage and diversion projects in villages and towns around the reservoir area, which are connected with large and small mountain ponds, river dams and reservoir channels. There are large and small water reservoirs and diversion channels (ditches) in the orange garden, and the groundwater quality is good and clear, which provides very favorable irrigation conditions for the orange production base.
As of 2014, Dongjiang Orange has a protected area of 7600 hectares and an annual output of 230,000 tons.
In 2015, the citrus planting area has reached 123,000 mu, the output has exceeded 260,000 tons and the output value is 680 million yuan, involving 150,000 farmers, which has driven 130,000 people out of poverty and become the leading industry of Dongjiang reservoir area immigrants.
On February 10, 2015, the former Ministry of Agriculture approved the implementation of the national agricultural product geographical indication registration protection for "Dongjiang Orange".
