Located in Luoxianling, Chenzhou Nanling Botanical Garden was established in 1989 and is under unified management with Chenzhou Forestry Research Institute (established in 1963). In 2009, the Nanling Branch of Hunan Forest Botanical Garden was affixed with the approval of Hunan Forestry Department. In April 2010, the Chenzhou State-owned Experimental Forest Farm was affixed with the approval of Hunan Forestry Department. At present, the core management area of the botanical garden is 40.2 hectares and the associated area is 813.3 hectares. Its main functions include forestry scientific research, species ex-situ conservation, promotion and demonstration of advanced forestry practical technology, and providing popular science education and leisure places for the public.
There are abundant vegetation, lush forests and 2332 species of ex-situ preserved plants belonging to 860 genera and 188 families. Among them, 75 species are the key protected plants of the state and Hunan provinces, including the Chinese fir known as "plant panda", "plant living fossil" metasequoia, and "ancient species left over from Quaternary glacial period", such as Taxus chinensis var. mairei and so on. Precious plants. The file of plant introduction data card and the database of plant resources have been established to make the management of plant resources more standardized and scientific. Now the Garden has Sweet Osmanthus Garden, Cherry Garden, Rhododendron Garden, Crape Myrtle Garden, Rare Botanical Garden, Magnolia Garden, Bamboo Garden, Linyilan Garden and other special plant collection areas.
Since the establishment of the Garden, with the care and support of all levels and departments, the Garden has undertaken 160 national, provincial and municipal scientific research projects, achieved 64 scientific research achievements, published 10 monographs (including editors), and published more than 400 academic papers. Especially in recent years, new achievements have been made in scientific and technological innovation, including one national invention patent, six second-class prizes for scientific and technological progress in Hunan Province (including cooperation), two first-class prizes for scientific and technological progress in Chenzhou, one second-class prize for scientific and technological progress in Chenzhou and one third-class prize for scientific and technological progress in Chenzhou.
In recent years, with its rich plant resources, beautiful landscape, the concept of popularizing plant science knowledge, advocating two-oriented society construction and ecological civilization, the Garden has carried out a rich and colorful science popularization activities. Every year, seasonal theme flower exhibitions such as tulips and sunflowers are held, with an annual visitor volume of more than 400,000 people. The Botanical Garden has been awarded "National Forestry Science Popularization Base", "Hunan Ecological Civilization Education Base", "Hunan Science and Technology Popularization Base", "Hunan Two-oriented Society Publicity and Education Base", "Hunan Science Popularization Education Base", "Chenzhou Science Popularization Base" and "Chenzhou Minors' Extracurricular Activity Base" successively, becoming the bridgehead of popularization of forestry scientific research in our city.
